Rajasthan is divided among 33 districts. Each district is split further into 331 tehsils and 352 panchayat samities. It is the country’s biggest state, with 3.422 million sq. km. According to the 2011 census, the state’s population is 6.854 crores.
According to the Ministry of Road, Transport & Highways (MoRTH) Report on ‘Road Accidents in India 2019,’ there were 23,480 road accidents and 10,563 persons died in road accidents in Rajasthan. Jaipur has the second rank regarding accident-related deaths and fourth position in terms of accidents in 2019 among the million-plus cities. The state ranked the seventh highest in the number of road accidents with a share of 5.2 percent in the country.
Rajasthan has the sixth position in respect of accident-related deaths. The number of road accidents in Rajasthan increased from 21,743 in 2018 to 23,480 in 2019. In 2019, over-speeding caused 19,889 accidents and 9050 deaths; not wearing helmets caused 1714 deaths; not wearing seat belts caused 840 deaths second-highest in India.
Rajasthan Road Safety Observatory (RRSO) is the sub-national forum for road safety data, policies and practices to protect human life on the roads across Rajasthan.

Objectives

The objective of the Observatory is to become the one-stop destination of Rajasthan Road Safety. It will facilitate cross-learning of best practices, produce new knowledge products on road safety for wider use and dissemination, and make a critical mass of common road users aware, sensitised, and motivated to save lives on roads in the state. The Observatory will do evidence-based advocacy on five key risk factors and attempt to build a network of CSOs working on road safety, victims of road accidents, media representatives and policymakers in the state.

The Observatory provides the state a means to collect road safety data more systematically and raise awareness of the different facets of road safety and the social and economic consequences of road accidents.
